A man who contaminated treats with tranquilliser and gave them to minors at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual crimes against two young males aged nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight youngsters and one adult became sick at the location in mid-summer.

The senior citizen, from that region, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on Friday.

However, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was remanded in custody prior to a further hearing on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, described the defendant's actions to the court.

She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a youth camp which he managed.

Ruben conducted a "treat game" with the children, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to eat sweets "rapidly".

She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the boys "over an extended period", and minors had previously become sick the next day.

She explained Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his stepchild had concerns about the situation, justifiably.

"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."

The prosecutor said materials including infant oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepson contacted the authorities about his worries.

She stated the defendant went on to play the "treat game" with six boys that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she continued.

The police watchdog, the police conduct office, previously told that it was reviewing the police response of the incident.

Mrs Prior said the youngsters were struggling to walk due to their condition, so the stepson contacted the authorities once more.

She explained Ruben then played the "treat game" in a area of five children.
